The knowledge of the nuclear spin- and parity-dependent level densities ρ(E,J,π) is important for understanding statistical properties of nuclei and reaction rates. We show that the earlier suggested method of exponential extrapolation, which allows one to find the yrast energy with high accuracy even for very large shell model Hamiltonian matrices, can be combined with the formalism of statistical spectroscopy in order to obtain the reliable level density.
