J. M. Dawson Received 25 January 1971 Spontaneously generated magnetic fields of the order of a kilogauss have been observed in a laser-produced plasma, using a variety of targets and background pressures. The generation of these magnetic fields is explained in terms of thermoelectric currents associated with large temperature gradients near the target. ©1971 The American Physical Society
