Show Abstract
We have measured cross sections for (d,2He)-induced reactions on 26Mg at an energy of Ed=125.2 MeV. The measured Gamow-Teller strength is significantly smaller than that inferred from (p,n) reactions. We demonstrate that β+ Gamow-Teller strengths for T0+1 states deduced from (p,n) reactions may have significant systematic uncertainties due to ambiguities in the large backgrounds that must be subtracted. © 1996 The American Physical Society.

Show Abstract
We have measured cross sections for (d,2He) induced reactions on the p-shell nuclei 6Li, 12C, and 13C and the sd-shell nucleus 24Mg at an energy of Ed=125.2 MeV. The measured excitation energy spectra are very similar to those from (p,n), (n,p), and (d,2He) reactions at higher energies. The measured 0° (d,2He) cross sections show a remarkably well-defined linear relation with the Gamow-Teller strengths deduced either from β decay or from (p,n) reactions. Our results demonstrate that the (d,2He) reaction can be used as a powerful tool to study Gamow-Teller strengths in the β+ direction at energies as low as Ed=125.2 MeV.
