We have measured the transverse asymmetry A_T^' in the quasielastic ³He→(e→,e^') process with high precision at Q² values from 0.1 to 0.6  (GeV/c)². The neutron magnetic form factor G_Mⁿ was extracted at Q² values of 0.1 and 0.2  (GeV/c)² using a nonrelativistic Faddeev calculation which includes both final-state interactions (FSI) and meson-exchange currents (MEC). Theoretical uncertainties due to the FSI and MEC effects were constrained with a precision measurement of the spin-dependent asymmetry in the threshold region of ³He→(e→,e^'). We also extracted the neutron magnetic form factor G_Mⁿ at Q² values of 0.3 to 0.6  (GeV/c)² based on plane wave impulse approximation calculations.

We measured angular distributions of differential cross section, beam analyzing power, and recoil polarization for neutral pion electroproduction at Q²=1.0 (GeV/c)² in 10 bins of 1.17≤W≤1.35 GeV across the Δ resonance. A total of 16 independent response functions were extracted, of which 12 were observed for the first time. Comparisons with recent model calculations show that response functions governed by real parts of interference products are determined relatively well near the physical mass, W=M_Δ≈1.232 GeV, but the variation among models is large for response functions governed by imaginary parts, and for both types of response functions, the variation increases rapidly with W>M_Δ. We performed a multipole analysis that adjusts suitable subsets of ℓ_π≤2 amplitudes with higher partial waves constrained by baseline models. This analysis provides both real and imaginary parts. The fitted multipole amplitudes are nearly model independent—there is very little sensitivity to the choice of baseline model or truncation scheme. By contrast, truncation errors in the traditional Legendre analysis of N→Δ quadrupole ratios are not negligible. Parabolic fits to the W dependence around M_Δ for the multiple analysis gives values for Re(S₁₊/M₁₊)=(-6.61±0.18)% and Re(E₁₊/M₁₊)=(-2.87±0.19)% for the pπ⁰ channel at W=1.232 GeV and Q²=1.0 (GeV/c)² that are distinctly larger than those from the Legendre analysis of the same data. Similarly, the multipole analysis gives Re(S₀₊/M₁₊)=(+7.1±0.8)% at W=1.232 GeV, consistent with recent models, while the traditional Legendre analysis gives the opposite sign because its truncation errors are quite severe.

The recoil proton polarization was measured in the ²H(e→,e^′p→)n reaction in Hall A of the Thomas Jefferson National Accelerator Facility. The electron kinematics were centered on the quasielastic peak (x_Bj≈1) and included three values of the squared four-momentum transfer, Q²=0.43,1.00 and 1.61 (GeV/c)². For Q²=0.43 and 1.61 (GeV/c)², the missing momentum, p_m, was centered at zero, whereas for Q²=1.00  (GeV/c)² two values of p_m were chosen: 0 and 174  MeV/c. At low p_m, the Q² dependence of the longitudinal polarization, P_z^′, is not well described by a state-of-the-art calculation. Further, at higher p_m, a 3.5σ discrepancy was observed in the transverse polarization, P_x^′. Understanding the origin of these discrepancies is important to confidently extract the neutron electric form factor from the analogous ²H(e→,e^′n→)p experiment.

We measured angular distributions of recoil-polarization response functions for neutral pion electroproduction for W=1.23  GeV at Q²=1.0  (GeV/c)², obtaining 14 separated response functions plus 2 Rosenbluth combinations; of these, 12 have been observed for the first time. Dynamical models do not describe quantities governed by imaginary parts of interference products well, indicating the need for adjusting magnitudes and phases for nonresonant amplitudes. We performed a nearly model-independent multipole analysis and obtained values for Re (S₁₊/M₁₊)=-(6.84±0.15)% and Re (E₁₊/M₁₊)=-(2.91±0.19)% that are distinctly different from those from the traditional Legendre analysis based upon M₁₊ dominance and ℓ_π≤1 truncation.

We have studied the quasielastic ³He(e,e^′p)²H reaction in perpendicular coplanar kinematics, with the energy and the momentum transferred by the electron fixed at 840 MeV and 1502  MeV/c, respectively. The ³He(e,e^′p)²H cross section was measured for missing momenta up to 1000  MeV/c, while the A_TL asymmetry was extracted for missing momenta up to 660  MeV/c. For missing momenta up to 150  MeV/c, the cross section is described by variational calculations using modern ³He wave functions. For missing momenta from 150 to 750  MeV/c, strong final-state interaction effects are observed. Near 1000  MeV/c, the experimental cross section is more than an order of magnitude larger than predicted by available theories. The A_TL asymmetry displays characteristic features of broken factorization with a structure that is similar to that generated by available models.

The ratio of the proton elastic electromagnetic form factors, G_Ep/G_Mp, was obtained by measuring P_t and P_ℓ, the transverse and longitudinal recoil proton polarization components, respectively, for the elastic e→p→ep→reaction in the four-momentum transfer squared range of 0.5 to 3.5  GeV². In the single-photon exchange approximation, G_Ep/G_Mp is directly proportional to P_t/P_ℓ. The simultaneous measurement of P_t and P_ℓ in a polarimeter reduces systematic uncertainties. The results for G_Ep/G_Mp show a systematic decrease with increasing Q², indicating for the first time a definite difference in the distribution of charge and magnetization in the proton. The data have been reanalyzed and their systematic uncertainties have become significantly smaller than those reported previously.

Results of the Jefferson Lab Hall A quasielastic ³He(e,e^′p)pn measurements are presented. These measurements were performed at fixed transferred momentum and energy, q=1502  MeV/c and ω=840  MeV, respectively, for missing momenta p_m up to 1  GeV/c and missing energies in the continuum region, up to pion threshold; this kinematic coverage is much more extensive than that of any previous experiment. The cross section data are presented along with the effective momentum density distribution and compared to theoretical models.

The generalized forward spin polarizabilities γ₀ and δ_LT of the neutron have been extracted for the first time in a Q² range from 0.1 to 0.9  GeV². Since γ₀ is sensitive to nucleon resonances and δ_LT is insensitive to the Δ resonance, it is expected that the pair of forward spin polarizabilities should provide benchmark tests of the current understanding of the chiral dynamics of QCD. The new results on δ_LT show significant disagreement with chiral perturbation theory calculations, while the data for γ₀ at low Q² are in good agreement with a next-to-leading-order relativistic baryon chiral perturbation theory calculation. The data show good agreement with the phenomenological MAID model.

We report a virtual Compton scattering study of the proton at low c.m. energies. We have determined the structure functions P_LL-P_TT/ϵ and P_LT, and the electric and magnetic generalized polarizabilities (GPs) α_E(Q²) and β_M(Q²) at momentum transfer Q²=0.92 and 1.76  GeV². The electric GP shows a strong falloff with Q², and its global behavior does not follow a simple dipole form. The magnetic GP shows a rise and then a falloff; this can be interpreted as the dominance of a long-distance diamagnetic pion cloud at low Q², compensated at higher Q² by a paramagnetic contribution from πN intermediate states.

We have measured the parity-violating electroweak asymmetry in the elastic scattering of polarized electrons from protons. Significant contributions to this asymmetry could arise from the contributions of strange form factors in the nucleon. The measured asymmetry is A=−15.05±0.98(stat)±0.56(syst)  ppm at the kinematic point ⟨θ_lab⟩=12.3° and ⟨Q²⟩=0.477  (GeV∕c)². Based on these data as well as data on electromagnetic form factors, we extract the linear combination of strange form factors G_E^s+0.392G_M^s=0.014±0.020±0.010, where the first error arises from this experiment and the second arises from the electromagnetic form factor data. This paper provides a full description of the special experimental techniques employed for precisely measuring the small asymmetry, including the first use of a strained GaAs crystal and a laser-Compton polarimeter in a fixed target parity-violation experiment.

Exclusive electroproduction of π⁰ mesons on protons in the backward hemisphere has been studied at Q²=1.0  GeV² by detecting protons in the forward direction in coincidence with scattered electrons from the 4  GeV electron beam in Jefferson Lab’s Hall A. The data span the range of the total (γ*p) center-of-mass energy W from the pion production threshold to W=2.0  GeV. The differential cross sections σ_T+ϵσ_L, σ_TL, and σ_TT were separated from the azimuthal distribution and are presented together with the MAID and SAID parametrizations.

We have measured the spin structure functions g₁ and g₂ of ³He in a double-spin experiment by inclusively scattering polarized electrons at energies ranging from 0.862 to 5.058 GeV off a polarized ³He target at a 15.5° scattering angle. Excitation energies covered the resonance and the onset of the deep inelastic regions. We have determined for the first time the Q² evolution of Γ₁(Q²)=∫₀¹g₁(x,Q²)dx, Γ₂(Q²)=∫₀¹g₂(x,Q²)dx, and d₂(Q²)=∫₀¹x²[2g₁(x,Q²)+3g₂(x,Q²)]dx for the neutron in the range 0.1≤Q²≤0.9  GeV² with good precision. Γ₁(Q²) displays a smooth variation from high to low Q². The Burkhardt-Cottingham sum rule holds within uncertainties and d₂ is nonzero over the measured range.

We have measured the proton recoil polarization in the ⁴He(e→ ,e^′p→)⁴H reaction at Q²=0.5, 1.0, 1.6, and 2.6   (GeV/c)². The measured ratio of polarization transfer coefficients differs from a fully relativistic calculation, favoring the inclusion of a medium modification of the proton form factors predicted by a quark-meson coupling model. In addition, the measured induced polarizations agree reasonably well with the fully relativistic calculation indicating that the treatment of final-state interactions is under control.

A high precision measurement of the transverse spin-dependent asymmetry A_T^′ in ³He→(e→,e^′) quasielastic scattering was performed in Hall A at Jefferson Lab at values of the squared four-momentum transfer, Q², between 0.1 and 0.6 (GeV/c)². A_T^′ is sensitive to the neutron magnetic form factor, G_Mⁿ. Values of G_Mⁿ at Q²=0.1 and 0.2 (GeV/c)², extracted using Faddeev calculations, were reported previously. Here, we report the extraction of G_Mⁿ for the remaining Q² values in the range from 0.3 to 0.6 (GeV/c)² using a plane-wave impulse approximation calculation. The results are in good agreement with recent precision data from experiments using a deuterium target.

We present data on the inclusive scattering of polarized electrons from a polarized ³He target at energies from 0.862 to 5.06 GeV, obtained at a scattering angle of 15.5°. Our data include measurements from the quasielastic peak, through the nucleon resonance region, and beyond, and were used to determine the virtual photon cross-section difference σ_1/2-σ_3/2. We extract the extended Gerasimov-Drell-Hearn integral for the neutron in the range of four-momentum transfer squared Q² of 0.1–0.9   GeV².

The first complete measurements of the angular distributions of the two-body deuteron photodisintegration differential cross section at photon energies above 1.6 GeV were performed at the Thomas Jefferson National Accelerator Facility. The results show a persistent forward-backward asymmetry up to E_γ=2.4 GeV, the highest-energy measured in this experiment. The Hard Rescattering and the Quark-Gluon string models are in fair agreement with the results.

We present measurements of the recoil proton polarization for the ¹H(γ→,p→)π⁰ reaction for θ_c.m.^π=60°–135° and for photon energies up to 4.1 GeV. These are the first data in this reaction for polarization transfer with circularly polarized photons. Various theoretical models are compared with the results. No evidence for hadron helicity conservation is observed. Models that employ factorization are not favored. It appears from the strong angular dependence of the induced polarization at photon energies of 2.5 and 3.1 GeV that a relatively high spin resonance or background amplitude might exist in this energy region.

The ²H(e,e^′p)n cross section was measured in Hall A of the Thomas Jefferson National Accelerator Facility near the top of the quasielastic peak (x_Bj=0.964) at a four-momentum transfer squared, Q²=0.665   (GeV/c)² (ω=0.368  GeV, W=2.057  GeV), and for recoil momenta up to 550  MeV/c. The measured cross section deviates by 1–2σ from a state-of-the-art calculation at low recoil momenta. At high recoil momenta the cross section is well described by the same calculation; however, in this region, final-state interactions and interaction currents are predicted to be large, and alternative choices of nucleon-nucleon potential and nucleon current operator may result in significant spread in the calculations.

New data are presented on the p(e,e^′p)π⁰ reaction at threshold at a four-momentum transfer of Q²  =  0.05 GeV²/c². The data were taken with the three-spectrometer setup of the A1 Collaboration at the Mainz Microtron MAMI. The complete center of mass solid angle was covered up to a center of mass energy of 4 MeV above threshold. Combined with measurements at three different values of the virtual photon polarization ε, the structure functions σ_T, σ_L, σ_TT, and σ_TL are determined. The results are compared with calculations in heavy baryon chiral perturbation theory and with a phenomenological model. The measured cross section is significantly smaller than both predictions.

We present the first precision measurement of the spin-dependent asymmetry in the threshold region of ³H→e(e→,e^′) at Q² values of 0.1 and 0.2 (GeV/c)². The agreement between the data and nonrelativistic Faddeev calculations which include both final-state interactions and meson-exchange current effects is very good at Q²  =  0.1 (GeV/c)², while a small discrepancy at Q²  =  0.2 (GeV/c)² is observed.

We present measurements of the ratio of the proton elastic electromagnetic form factors, μ_pG_Ep/G_Mp. The Jefferson Lab Hall A Focal Plane Polarimeter was used to determine the longitudinal and transverse components of the recoil proton polarization in ep elastic scattering; the ratio of these polarization components is proportional to the ratio of the two form factors. These data reproduce the observation of Jones et al. [Phys. Rev. Lett. 84, 1398 (2000)], that the form factor ratio decreases significantly from unity above Q²=1 GeV².

We present measurements of the recoil proton polarization for the d(γ→,p→)n reaction at θ_c.m.  =  90° for photon energies up to 2.4 GeV. These are the first data in this reaction for polarization transfer with circularly polarized photons. The induced polarization p_y vanishes above 1 GeV, contrary to meson-baryon model expectations, in which resonances lead to large polarizations. However, the polarization transfer C_x does not vanish above 1 GeV, inconsistent with hadron helicity conservation. Thus, we show that the scaling behavior observed in the d(γ,p)n cross sections is not a result of perturbative QCD. These data should provide important tests of new nonperturbative calculations in the intermediate energy regime.

We have measured the transverse asymmetry A_T^′ in ³He→(e→,e^′) quasielastic scattering in Hall A at Jefferson Laboratory with high precision for Q² values from 0.1 to 0.6 (GeV/c)².
