Physical Review Letters – 7 January 2002
Volume 88, Issue 1

Velocity field of a supersonic granular flow incident on a wedge; the colors indicate the horizontal component of the velocity. As the flow encounters the obstacle it forms a shock that is very similar to shocks formed by supersonic gas flows. [Erin C. Rericha, Chris Bizon, Mark D. Shattuck, and Harry L. Swinney, Phys. Rev. Lett. 88, 014302 (2001)]
