Calculated shear modulus G of stainless steel alloys as a function of the percentage of chromium (vertical axis) and of nickel (horizontal); red corresponds to high G ( 77 GPa), yellow to intermediate, and blue to low G ( 75 GPa). The authors apply a recently developed quantum-theoretical method to study the elastic properties of a series of Fe-Cr-Ni alloys and predict two new basic compositions. [L. Vitos, P. A.
