Figures (a) & (b) are topographic & phase images of a polymer monolayer from intermittent-contact atomic force microscopy; the inset shows the polymer's structure & backbone. While intermittent-contact AFM usually measures only out-of-plane properties, the color contrast in (b) is due to friction and in-plane viscoelasticity [Matthew S. Marcus, Robert W. Carpick, Darryl Y. Sasaki, and M. A. Eriksson, Phys. Rev. Lett. 88, 226103 (2002)]
