Absorption images of a Bose-Einstein condensate propagating through a magnetic waveguide constructed on a silicon microchip. The image in (a) shows excitation-less propagation, a key step towards microchip-based atom interferometers. The transverse excitations in (b) & (c) are due to downstream perturbations in the guiding potential. [A. E. Leanhardt, A. P. Chikkatur, D. Kielpinski, Y. Shin, T. L. Gustavson, W. Ketterle, and D.
