Physical Review Letters – 25 April 2003
Volume 90, Issue 16

Microphotograph of in vitro neuron cells after 7 days of growth and self-organization. At low cell densities (not shown), the cells are distributed uniformly over the substrate; at the higher cell density depicted, the cells spontaneously migrate to form a network of clusters connected by bundles of axons. (White scale bar = 500 microns.) [Ronen Segev, Morris Benveniste, Yoash Shapira, and Eshel Ben-Jacob, Phys. Rev. Lett. 90, 168101 (2003)]
