STM conductivity images of single Pd atoms deposited on an Al2O3 surface, taken at the indicated voltages. Such images can probe how the electronic structures of isolated metal atoms are modified by defects in the oxide surface. The apparent sizes of the atoms are indicated by the circles. [N. Nilius, T.
