Illustration of the spin profile of a half-quantum vortex ring (an "Alice ring"); the left image shows the spin expectation value and on the right is a cross section of the spin magnitude. A stability analysis of topological point defects in a spin-1 BEC of optically trapped Na atoms shows that the defects could spontaneously deform into stable, observable Alice rings. [J. Ruostekoski and J. R. Anglin, Phys. Rev. Lett. 91, 190402 (2003)]
