Volume 91, Issue 20

Plot of nuclear multifragmentation events (the breakup of hot nuclei) from a statistical model. The model shows an accumulation of these events in the compact-configuration, "liquid-phase" region (low-excitation energy, high-Coulomb energy; upper left), as well as in the rarefied, "gas-phase" region (high-excitation, low-Coulomb energy; lower right).
