False-color absorption images of ultracold ytterbium atoms after release from an optical trap; the time-of-flight axis is in milliseconds. The atoms expand anisotropically, a signal that they have formed a Bose-Einstein condensate. This is the first observation of the Bose-Einstein condensation of atoms in spin-singlet states.
