Phase-space Wigner functions of I+ ions at 2 picoseconds (a) and 5 picoseconds (b) after dissociation of an I2 molecule by a femtosecond laser pulse. Each Wigner function give a complete characterization of the internuclear quantum state at that time; they were obtained using quantum state tomography from momentum and position measurements (the open circles on the side panels).
