Schematic of an experiment at the OMEGA laser facility for the production and measurement of x rays from a Ti-doped aerogel target. Because of its low density the aerogel, after being ionized by the laser beams, is an efficient source of x rays, converting about one percent of the incident laser energy into Ti K-shell radiation.
