Phase-space distribution of relativistic electrons generated by a high-intensity laser pulse striking a foil target, from a particle-in-cell simulation. The electrons are accelerated into the target in short bunches twice every laser cycle and can radiate coherent radiation as they cross the rear boundary into vacuum. [F. N. Beg, E. L. Clark, M. S.
