Physical Review Letters – 3 December 2004
Volume 93, Issue 23

Photographs of a phase transition in a new class of liquid crystals (tetrapode oligomers). The right column shows a uniaxial nematic phase in a free-standing film; as the temperature is lowered, a new biaxial nematic phase is observed (left column). The transition is accompanied by a change in the texture (top images) and by a splitting of the isogyres (bottom). [K. Merkel, A. Kocot, J. K. Vij, R. Korlacki, G. H. Mehl, and T. Meyer, Phys. Rev. Lett. 93, 237801 (2004)]
