Plot of the differential conductance of a quantum dot with up to four electrons as a function of gate and source-drain voltages, allowing spectroscopy of its quantum states. The dark band in the (upper-image) two-electron region shows the onset of tunneling through the triplet excited state and gives a direct measure of the singlet-triplet splitting in "quantum-dot helium". This splitting is reduced in a magnetic field (bottom image). [D. M. Zumbühl, C. M. Marcus, M. P. Hanson, and A. C. Gossard, Phys. Rev. Lett. 93, 256801 (2004)]
