Physical Review Letters – 30 July 2004
Volume 93, Issue 5

Photomicrograph of a stage in the melting of a colloidal suspension composed of rods of fd virus and a polymer. The system melts from a lamellar phase to a nematic phase of aligned rods. At the stage depicted, the growing nematic background phase has expelled polymer into the lamellar phase, which forms into elongated stripes consisting of single lamellae (white lines) separated by isotropic phase (dark areas).
