The image shows a single crystal of the magnetic insulator BaCuSi2O6 as seen through an optical microscope. Also known as Han Purple and synthesized for use as a pigment 2000 years ago by the Chinese, this compound has a quasi-2D structure that plays an important role in the realization of Bose-Einstein condensation of spin-triplet excitations in an external magnetic field.
