Physical Review Letters – 18 March 2005
Volume 94, Issue 10

Self-assembled structures formed by magnetic microparticles in an oscillating magnetic field. The ring structure on the left is energetically more favorable than a chain (right) for more than four particles, but requires overcoming a potential barrier associated with chain bending. Clusters (middle) can form from two parallel chains with opposite polarizations. [A. Snezhko, I. S. Aranson, and W.-K. Kwok, Phys. Rev. Lett. 94, 108002 (2005)]
