Scanning electron micrograph of a multi-element nanomechanical oscillator consisting of 50 billion silicon atoms. The insets show simulations of the 10-MHz fundamental mode (b) and of a 1.5-GHz collective mode (c). At low temperatures the 1.5-GHz mode shows a discrete response to a driving force, possible evidence of the onset of quantum behavior in this macroscopic system.
