Physical Review Letters – 4 February 2005
Volume 94, Issue 4

Velocity mode populations resulting from a simulated collision of two identical Bose-Einstein condensates of 3 million sodium atoms each. The top images show the vz = 0 and vx = 0 planes, respectively, at t = 0; the bottom images are at t = 0.5 ms. The turbulence observed in the scattering halo (circular feature in bottom images) arises from amplification of the initial quantum vacuum fluctuations. [A. A. Norrie, R. J. Ballagh, and C. W. Gardiner, Phys. Rev. Lett. 94, 040401 (2005)]
