Volume 94, Issue 5

Time evolution of the plasma-density profile from a simulation of stimulated Brillouin backscattering, a plasma process in which an incident EM wave decays into a backscattered wave and a forward propagating ion-acoustic wave. The simulation shows that, for high-intensity incident waves, cavities form in the plasma several picoseconds into the interaction process. [S. Weber, C. Riconda, and V. T. Tikhonchuk, Phys. Rev. Lett. 94, 055005 (2005)]
