Real-space images of an ultrashort light pulse propagating through a photonic-crystal waveguide, using time-resolved near-field microscopy. The first 4 images show a pulse propagating unhindered through the waveguide; in its wake, a long-lived optical field is observed captured in the first 25 µm of the waveguide, slowed down to the extent that its movement is not discernable.
